Art Competitions as Part of the Program of the Modern Olympic Games

Topicality. Today a lot of experts that researched of the Olympic program pay the attention only to a sport component of it. Unfortunately the cultural and educational activities during the Games remains a little studied scientific question. Objectives of the work are to highlight the role and place of the arts competitions in the program of the Games of the Olympics 1912–1948. Results. The program of the Games of the 1912 Olympics included the Art Competition. The popularity of Art Competition from Games to Games grew, but the problems of judging and the principle of amateur of participants led to the exclusion of Arts Competitions of the Olympic Games program. Conclusions. During the period of 1912–1948 the Art competitions were full component of the program of the Olympic Games; the 9 % of all participants of Games where the artists. They competed in five categories; 146 artists won Olympic medals.
