Abstract

The most significant contribution to the international experience of solving environmental problems in sports was made by such authors as B. Bendandi  (Italy), L. Da Costa (Portugal), B. Kidd (Canada), S. Lizava (Japan), W. J. Mos, G. Taner  (USA), D. Chernushenko (Canada), O. Tsiganenko, O. Yarmoliuk (Ukraine) and the others. Their scientific development of environmental activities in sports practice and publications dedicated to solution of environmental problems in sports have led to taking the problems at the international level.

The objective of the article is to identify the organizational and managerial bases of environmental protection activities as a direction of sustainable development in modern Olympic sport. The methods of theoretical analysis of scientific and methodological literature, system analysis, sociological methods (questionnaires), methods of mathematical statistics were applied.102 representatives of the NOC, national Olympic academies and educational institutions from 76 countries in Europe, Canada, South America, Japan participated in the sociological survey.

The article outlines approaches to defining organizational and managerial bases for environmental activities of the subjects of the Olympic movement, implementation of environmental policy and in particular the concept of sustainable development in the organization and conduct of sports events and competitions, compliance with environmental requirements for the operation of sports facilities, environmental safety of sports activities, owing to the usage of ecologically oriented products of Olympic sponsors and suppliers, paying attention to the implementation of environmental technologies aiding further strengthening the legacy of the Olympic Games.
